I wouldn't be opposed to renting Brandon McCarthy for a few months, then seeing if they can get him locked up to a longer deal.
The A's aren't going to get a comp pick for him unless they offer him a deal that pays him $12.5 million in year 1, which is probably unlikely.
Little bit different situation than, say, Anibal Sanchez, who definitely is worth $12 million/year and might take that.
Not sure what Beane would want for him, but he doesn't have nearly as much leverage as in the past. Something like David Lough + Louis Coleman + Tim Melville might be enough to get that done.
