I'm sorry, Phil. That had to be awful beyond words.
My story isn't as awful but none the less illustrates your point of different things to different people. Four years ago today I had to euthanize the greatest soul ever to grace the earth, my 16 year old cat Bandy. He appeared to save the day when I was deep in a postpartum depression. I had never had a cat and didn't like them (due to my mother's indoctrination) and he basically changed that. I will never be without one. He bravely fought from advanced heart and kidney failure for two years when he was given a very small window of time to live. Up until the end he was terrorizing small animals and bringing them home for me as a gift. I miss him.
