There seems to be very little point in the Chiefs agreeing to a deal before the day SF would have to pay Alex Smith if he's on their roster, unless that date is after the draft. KC could use the possibility of that occurring to leverage a better deal. SF is not going to risk being stuck with his salary in a dispute over a 5th versus a 4th round pick.
So it all makes total sense. The Chiefs act like they are flat out in love with Geno Smith. They balk at SF's desired compensation for Smith's services. The Chiefs play chicken with them as long as they like.
I'm pretty sure they will get their man in the end.
