Okay, I leave for a couple of weeks and this whole place falls apart. Come on, people. Get on your feet. Walk it off. Rub a little dirt on it.
Given what we've heard about Alex Smith, he has an understanding of the game and a passion for the game. He just doesn't have the ability. He's an upgraded version of Todd Collins.
So why is everyone assuming that he's the long term starter? I'm willing to wager that there are one or all of three factors behind this. First, we need a veteran to help teach Geno and mentor him. It sounds like Smith is the type of guy who could do that. Second, Geno just may not be ready to start. Maybe Andy needs a guy for a year or two who can steer the boat while Geno is donning his superhero suit. And third, quarterback is the most important position on the field. If we can get an adequate backup for the long term, let's do it.
I still think we're drafting Geno.
My only annoyance with this trade is the cost that's being reported, if indeed it's true. I wouldn't mind the earlier rumor that it was a swap of seconds, but if we gave up a second and possibly more, then we overpaid. Backup quarterbacks shouldn't cost that much, especially when both Smith and Hasselbeck were probably going to be pounding the pavement looking for work anyway.
