I haven't lived in Kansas for my entire life, the military decided I would spend a good part of my time elsewhere but since you asked I've been to Talladega four times, Bristol twice, Darlington, Atlanta, Richmond, Texas, and Kansas for Cup races.
I don't build jack shit for cars but I did race for one season (1991) at the Talladega short track (not very well though, honestly). If you're curious, the short track is about a 1/2 mile east of the superspeedway, but on the north side of the road.
Wow, that's cool... And my "days" were at Martinsville (think Ricky Rudd!! Told you I was old!), so i have a lot of love for Martinsville, but I'm still a bigger fan of road courses. I still think they show, pound-for-pound which drivers can drive better than the others. As much as I'll watch the "super" speedway races, I think they could be shortened to 15-20 laps and, unfortunately, you'd see about all the real racing you're going to see. So we all have our favorites, and that's cool.

As for gear, I never did much beyond my own failed attempts on a 75 Dodge Dart Sport... However, the Ricky Rudd connection is through my brother-in-law. I learned a LOT from him as he was part of Ricky's engine team. As you might recall, Ricky was one of the first to move out of the NC in terms of a team's HQ. Albeit Chesapeake, VA is really far form NC - it's on the border (!!!) - it distance from Charlotte was notable. Well, the bottom line was I didn't learn enough, but I prefer to blame the parts my wallet limited me to!

Later, and a few dollars better, I bought and ran a 87 Porche 944 Turbo on local road course races. And that was FUN!!! But alas, I knew I wasn't "the man for the job" (behind the wheel) as my best time was bettered by my brother-in-law, by two seconds, after just two laps. So it's all good, it was fun just the same. What he could do in a Honda CVCC (in that class) was amazing, what he could do in a 944 was even more impressive...

Anyway, have a good day, and let's hope for an awesome race...
