1. Is that any less weird or wasteful than drafting a LT at #1 overall and having him sit for a year? It's one thing to do that with a QB, quite another to do it with a LT.
2. Alex Smith is the insurance policy. An expensive one, but a good one. He gets one or two seasons to prove his worth. What if he wins a Super Bowl for us in that time? Very likely we would keep Alex and trade away Geno. Waste of a #1 overall pick, but WHO ****ING CARES? WE WON THE SUPER BOWL! HYYEEEARARRRGH!!! If you're going to spend that many resources to line your ducks up in a row like that, better to do it for the QB position above any other.
