By trading an exorbitant price for Alex Smith and then handing a huge contract to Chase Daniel to back him, they have signalled not only that they aren't making that concerted effort this year, but also that they're not making it any time soon. While bringing in two guys who have a combined 0.5 percent chance of developing into a franchise guy.
Signing Chase Daniel by itself would make sense.
Trading for Alex Smith for a much lower price would make sense.
Either leaves open multiple options for acquiring a QB:
- drafting one at 1.1.
- drafting one 2.2
- trading back into the first with the 2.2 + to get a guy at a more realistic slot
- going with stop-gap options at stop-gap prices for 2013 and trying again in 2014
They don't even have the flexibility to try again next year as they should because they're giving up somewhere between a 2nd and a 4th to get Smith, severely limiting their ability to move up in a round or wait a round to get a QB in that draft.
