The San Francisco 49ers put the best roster in football around Alex Smith, and he couldn't make it to the Super Bowl.
His grand sum of accomplishments includes a playoff win against an incredibly flawed team with an awful defense and a crap-tastic performance against the Giants in which his crap play was a significant factor in the loss.
Oh, and he also was coached by one of the best coaches in the NFL while doing this (who benched him the first time he got a chance)
Anyone who thinks they can win the Super Bowl with Alex Smith is crazy.
That wouldn't have even been so bad. I get trying to bring in a decent QB for a few years, who isn't the worst guy in the NFL (I'll give you that Alex Grbonossel is at least a 15-22 QB in the NFL).
But the exorbitant price the Chiefs paid for him makes it extremely difficult - and much less likely - the Chiefs will draft someone who actually CAN be a top tier QB, good enough to win playoff games against elite teams and get the Chiefs to the Super Bowl.
We're down to hoping:
1) That Alex Grbonossel magically turns into an elite QB after nearly a decade as a starting QB in the league (Call this the Gannon Gambit)
2) That Chase Daniel blossoms in his chance to start, wins the job, and becomes an elite QB (can't even come up with a case of this to reference... Brunell Bullet?)
3) That the Chiefs turn a draft pick that is, at best, a scratcher ticket (3rd round or later) into a franchise QB (Call this the Brady Bluff)
