And the list goes on and on.
Teams do that because when you have a franchise starter (like Brees in New Orleans) it does little good to invest all that much money or that high of a draft pick in your backup. It's not a universal strategy, but it is quite common.
And we just gave one of those turds a bunch of money to actually play in the event of an injury to Alex Smith (which tends to happen every season, if only for a few games).
