I'd say we're facing a remodel more than a rebuild.
Say a new GM is hired. He sends Francoeur, Chen, Hochevar and Getz packing. $18.5 million saved.
A long-term extension with Santana can't be reached. $12 million saved.
Some of that money is going to go to pay increases for Guthrie, Gordon, Butler, Hosmer and Moustakas (I think it's about $10 million). That still leaves the Royals with enough cash to sign mid-level FAs at SP (if necessary) and a bat and not raise payroll from this season.
The new regime would still be dependent on Hosmer or Moustakas becoming a legit bat, but I still believe in the talent (Seitzer interview encouraged me there). If one of those guys becomes a legit bat, the lineup and rotation are probably good enough make 2014 a remodel rather than a rebuild.
