Factory workers generally have a higher starting wage than the skill of the job would suggest. Manufacturers want employees that will consistently show up to work and do a quality job that most times isn't pleasant and sometimes mind numbingly boring. This requires a pay scale that is higher than what most people would think is necessary.
I started out as a first level production supervisor and have worked my way up the ladder to plant manager. Manufacturing doesn't have to be a dead end job.
