I think I've probably screwed up with mine.
My goal was overall efficiency. I crunched the hell out of some numbers, figured out when certain players would be FAs, how long I wanted others and how to structure contracts to keep their costs as low as possible over that 4-10 year period that I wanted to keep guys. I then moved things around wherever possible to ensure I didn't have too many FAs that I wanted long term in any given year.
I gave Rodgers a 3 yr deal with the intention of giving him a 5 year deal after those 3 in order to keep his price more manageable as well; that 7 year deal to a QB was just brutal.
But unfortunately, I think I've ended up in that hellish middle; not enough FA money to really matter, but I've also not freed up shitloads of cap space for any given year.
All I've really done is make sure that I shouldn't ever really have to worry about getting my draft picks signed and could be able to make an over-market bid on a mid-tier FA every year or two.
As I've seen this unfold, I think I'd have just preferred to frontload my deals and see how things look in 3 years.
