Some motors are interference motors, meaning that the valves and pistons are capable of occupying the same space. Broken timing chain/belt on an interference motor usually means destroyed valves and damaged pistons. My old 3000GT V6 DOHC had an interference motor, but my 92 Toyota I4 pickup did not.
