He was no more injury prone than Trent Green from 1999-2001. Green missed the entire season and was only needed in eight games in 2000. He clearly wasn't 100% in 2001 but played anyway.
Smith's throwing shoulder was injured, Nolan didn't believe it to be serious, which caused Smith to miss far more playing time than if it had been dealt with properly initially. The 49ers ****ed that up, not Smith.
The health issue that concerns me about Smith are concussions. Aikman and Young dealt with concussions later in their careers. Both saw their level of play deteriorate.
