Coaching news; notes

http://www.washingtonexaminer.com/sp...-81370337.html

...The Redskins hired Lou Spanos as their linebackers coach today. He spent 16 seasons as a defensive assistant, including 15 as an assistant linebacker coach. He was with Pittsburgh when new Redskins coordinator Jim Haslett served in that same role with the Steelers in the late 1990s.
...Heard that Bob Slowik will join the staff in some capacity and it sounds as if Bobby Turner will accept the job of coaching the running backs. At one point, it appeared that all the Jim Zorn assistants would be fired, but not sure about that now. Special teams coach Danny Smith is a candidate to return, though my strong hunch is that he has options. Smith is considered one of the best special teams coaches and this is a year where there there are multiple openings. The Redskins job is his to lose, according to one NFL source.
...One player touted Scott Wachenheim as someone he'd like to see coach the offensive line. However, if he stays it's likely it would be as a tight ends coach.
...No word on Jerry Gray or Steve Jackson. One or both may stay, but clearly Gray would not be in the role he coveted. There's a definite feeling that he did not help himself with how he handled the interview situation in December. That could cost him a shot at a decent job.
...Left tackle Chris Samuels said he'll see his doctor in three or four weeks before making a final decision on whether or not to retire. Every time we talk to him, he seems very much at peace with not playing again. And if this injury proves to be a career-ender, he'll get a nice insurance payment every year. Could be as much as $300,000.
"I want to play. I love to play the game. But at this point in my life, health is first," Samuels said.
...Can the Redskins run the 3-4 defense? Don't know, but here's a little breakdown on their personnel. By the way, Spanos is well-versed in the 3-4 having used that in Pittsburgh. So that will help.
...If Tim Krumrie does come to coach the Redskins to coach the defensive line, one NFL source who knows him well said he'd love to see the interaction between he and Albert Haynesworth.
"That would be worth the price of admission," the source said. "Tim works out like a maniac. He will body slam him."
