Massey won the minor league gold glove at 2B and has a strong defensive rep, so I don’t think he’ll show poorly over time.
Honestly, I’m not sure you can evaluate anyone’s defense this year.
Matheny’s teams have consistently and historically been really bad at the fundamentals, because he doesn’t practice or emphasize them. His propensity for getting his teams to play tighter than Chiefsplanets members assholes when Billay enters the room probably doesn’t help, either.

I said it at the time of the hire. I’ve said it since. But literally, for a franchise that needs to 1) develop young players effectively 2) play excellent defense 3) be a plus baserunning team …
I don’t think you could have hired a worse manager. He is demonstrably awful at all 3 of those things.
