Depends on who you ask. Some people (me included) feel the terms are synonyms. Others (particularly backpackers and other assholes that claim to have a monopoly on hip hop culture) say that rap is anything that isn't punchline or back packer rap. It's a stupid false division. There used to be a big debate associated with it however it has died down in recent years.
