No, all we know is that he asked for his outright release (not to be traded). Is that a big red flag? No. Is it a red flag? Absolutely. And there will be guys out there that don't have any.

Mentorship is overrated. And as far as being a backup, WINNING is overrated. He MIGHT see the field 1 or 2 times during the season.
For a backup QB you need a guy that's 1) cheap and 2) serviceable.
Alex Smith doesn't really fit either of those bills.
