I would rather run 10 miles on snow and ice than 1 mile on a dreadmill. I ****ing hate treadmills. I have the heartrate monitor too, but I always forget to put it on before I leave in the morning.
The garmin connect does have a manual entry system so you could enter in your dreadmill runs (splits and all) if you wanted to. I would almost rather run without shoes than without my garmin. Worth every penny, and it wasn't cheap.
