this argument assumes that the quarterback drafted number one overall is actually able to start mid season or before and be successful. That is a big assumption that has made fools out of many franchises and put them back years when the guy they took didn't pan out (Leinert, Akili Smith, Jamarcus Russell, David Carr, etc.) I know not all those guys were drafted first overall, but they were all drafted very high and failed. Without a guy that is a capable qb already on the roster, you are forced to put a non ready rookie in the games. I just don't like it.
It's not an Alex Smith thing for me, its a "need a guy that can play" thing for me.
