I think their biggest mistake was not having any hunting supplies, trapping is such a hit and miss proposition, and trying to run an elk to death like a wolf? competing with wolves and bears for the same animal? holy crap!

I have to think that fish played a major role in their diet, even though its not mentioned in the story, to have such a presumably abundant resource outside their door and not use it? it doesnt make sense in the context of them saying that the late 50's were "the hungry years".

But you're right, if some modern catastrophe happened today and all of the sudden thousands of people were trying to make their living off the land in this country?... it'd be incredibly tough.
