Never said Carr was going to become a great QB. In fact, I've gone on the record several times on the forum, as well as in real life, for the last 3-4 years that he's not the answer at QB. He's kind of a more athletic Alex Smith clone, or could be. But he has mental farts during games that have plagued him since entering the NFL that don't seem to be going away. However, Gruden has minimized a lot of these through his play-calling/designs. And that'll continue going forward.
But the
Raiders will be relevant next year. Not great, and certainly not a real challenge for the Chiefs in 2020, but they'll be in the national conversation next year as a real football team, not the joke they've been for more than a decade.
IF they draft well and increase their depth across the board. Aside from depth issues, their real problem going forward is Derek Carr. Can they succeed into the playoffs with him behind center? I think it's possible, but unlikely. I think they'll be forced to go QB shopping at the end of next year.
