In fact, you could go back to 2005, and point out how Big Ben won his first SB when the Steelers were a 10-6 no. 6 seed if you want to go back to the start of this "hot in the playoffs" recent trend.
Eli, Big Ben, and Joe Flacco (who no one would have called a "franchise" guy before the 2012 playoffs, but went 11-0 TD/INT ratio---reminds me of what Eli did in 2007).
If you want to argue that Alex Smith is a proto-Joe Flacco who has yet to blossom, I might give you more credence (but I'd still not believe you). But, that's not what you think. If you think a "smart, game manager" is going to blow up and lead anyone to the promised land, then you're a guy that chases a two out draw when the other players are already all-in (as in, you don't have any more implied odds to chase so you can't argue value).
