The downside is he definitely isn't going to opt out of his deal, because he's not beating 3/$39M on the open market.
So you're paying the Padres $60M for said prospect in basically a transfer fee. If you get even 6 years of solid MLB starter production from that prospect, you probably come out ahead. But you're paying a lot for it up front.
