The 5 major conferences simply wouldn't care if Memphis, Tulane, Cincy, etc got upset at them for declaring a champ because they could say you have your own opportunity to crown a champion in your own division.
It's a stroke of genius by the NCAA as well. It's a power move to keep themselves relevant. It takes the momentum of the NCAA Tournament and parlays it into something similar for football.
Could be huge.
