1. A .22lr is always a good weapon to have around. Are you dead sold on the Ruger 10/22? Perhaps just a personal preference but I would much rather have a much cheaper bolt action and spend less leaving me money for ammo or other toys.
Conversely, if you are thinking of a SHTF situation, you may want to take a look at the Henry AR-7.

2. I would leave the shotty just as in. If anything, add a Buttstock shellholder w/pouch. Something like:
