I don't think you can simulate game speed, even on a treadmill wearing pads. A treadmill goes straight, and you engage a specific set of muscles when running on a treadmill.
But, obviously in the game, sometimes you are back-peddling, or running down field with your torso towards the sideline, and of course you are cutting, making hard changes of direction, while trying to accelerate to make up the separation the wide receiver created with his cut, and all these different body positions engage several different sets of muscles.
The more muscles you engage, the more oxygen is needed to fuel those muscles. I have heard Bill Self talk about guys not being in game shape after missing only one week of practice, even midway through the season.
Another example of muscles requiring more oxygen is in MMA. Fighters usually have training camp for 2-3 months, which normally end with a significant weight cut. Often, the fighters who carry more muscle, and look like semi-pro body builders, get gassed quicker than an opponent who isn't as jacked.
He has looked good on the all-22 film, even in the Seattle game, and whatever happens to close out this season, I look forward to seeing what he does with a full off-season to prepare, OTAs, and a full training camp as a starting cornerback.
