It takes a season or two to get into high gear as I recall.
Come to think of it, I don't think I ever saw the movie. Heard it was pretty bad. Didn't start watching the series until midway season 1.
There are still some bad eps/arcs (the whole "bringing balance to the force" thing with Anakin in particular was I thought done poorly). But it's pretty steadily good by the end, and the good definitely outweighs the bad.
