The reason why they are saying that is because it is true.
All ties for a division, or wild card ties where there are more teams than wild cards available, are broken on the field. (so if we tie Oakland, we're #1 since Oakland still gets to have the 2nd wild card. If we're tied with both Oakland and Seattle, we'll have to play some complicated tiebreaker games to figure out who gets eliminated)
