And they're doing it exclusively to keep teasing out a Littlefinger's arc, which has clearly run out of steam. He's trapped in Winterfell where he can't really effectuate anything. Martin's creative enough to have figured out a way to get him and the Knights of the Vale out of there to actually
do something. And if he can't figure out a way to do that, he'd have just killed Littlefinger off.
But this whole 'ret-conning a character' or just flat making her stupid for the sake of an exhausted character arc is just terrible, terrible writing.
