Most trees can be pruned back pretty severely before they're affected. I had about 40% of a red oak removed and it's actually doing better now. It was really in need of a pruning, though.
I don't know how much you can prune a parking lot. Do you get to drink on the job? |

Won't hurt them, but there's ways to do it that are more aesthetically pleasing than just hacking away.

As I understand it you're better off doing it in the winter because the tree is dormant and it should be less likely to get bugs or disease until it's had some opportunity to heal.
I also believe you can take off up to 1/3 of the canopy with no harm. |

Actually, between late-November to mid-February is the best time to trim trees, especially oaks.
