Overview
Listed at 6-foot-1, 312 pounds, Nnadi is not the largest nose tackle in front of scouts during the 2017 season. Few will outwork him, however, as he was named a third-team All-ACC selection, compiling 56 tackles, 10 for loss, and 3.5 sacks in 13 starts. ACC coaches named him first-team all-conference in 2016 after earning the team's Defensive Most Improved Player award in the spring. Nnadi started 11 of 13 games played, fighting through an early-season ankle injury to be credited with 49 tackles from the middle, 10.5 for loss, and six sacks. He collected third-team all-conference accolades from league media as a sophomore, starting every game (45 tackles, two sacks), following a true freshman campaign that saw him on the field for nine games (18 tackles, six against Georgia Tech's triple-option rushing attack in the ACC Championship Game). Despite his lack of height, Nnadi was considered a top 10 defensive tackle prospect nationally after amassing 33 sacks in his final two years of high school ball.

It's hard to find "bad tape" for Nnadi. While NFL teams may see an undersized 4-3 nose tackle with limited pass rush value, I see a player with good power at the point of attack who can dislodge from single blocks and make plays. Nnadi has a good motor, active hands and enough pass rush ability to cause problems for blockers up front. Nnadi has the physical tools to play in one or two-gap schemes and has NFL starting ability.

Strengths

• Robust build with burly booty
• Low center of gravity increases leverage along interior
• Possesses outstanding play strength and can chunk plates around in the weight room like it's nothing
• Has good snap quickness
• Able to attack gaps or read and react as 2-gapper
• Keeps eyes peeled on ball-carriers
• Can stick and shed blockers to catch runners darting through his gaps
• Lateral agility and low pad level make him hard to secure and pin on move blocks
• Productive tackler with good range
• Leverages gap and works to maintain run fits
• Shows ability to recover when attacked and dislodged from angle block
• As a pass rusher, can counter from gap to gap when facing single block
• Utilizes a swim and a quality slap and rip to attack the edge
• Has lower body drive to generate some pocket push

Weaknesses

• Despite his compact build and quality mass, is still undersized by NFL standards as interior player
• Will get big-boyed at times when he's facing a wide-body with power
• Needs to win early with his hands to stay ahead in the rep
• Can still improve quickness to diagnose run direction
• Base is a little inconsistent through contact and he will lose some ground against quality double teams
• Pass rush loses steam when guards land a stiff, initial jab to start the rep

I have watched the game a couple of times now, and watched all previous games more than once, including the all-22, and there are times that the linebackers literally run to the LOS, and directly engage offensive linemen, completely taking themselves out of the play.

It's maddening. Some were making fun of others who wanted to sign DJ, because he is old and slow, but he very rarely engaged the offensive line, and stayed free to run to the ball.

As I have stated many times, Sutton cannot call defenses and scheme in a way to take advantage of the strengths of the players. I believe that switching to a 4-3 would free up the backers to run to the ball, obviously, but I also think our pass rush would improve.

Let me give you the starting defensive line I would like to see.

6'1" 317lb Derrick Nnadi at right tackle, 6'2" 310lb Xavier Williams at left tackle, Chris Jones at left defensive end, Allen Bailey at right defensive end.

I believe that Bailey is an absolute athletic freak, and he is very fast for his size, and would be able to be a very effective end. Chris Jones is also extremely athletic for his size, and fast too. Jones and Bailey could do damage, and with two 300+ pound tackles on the inside, either Jones or Bailey would be getting more one-on-one match ups.

Imagine that group of huge defensive linemen keeping the linebackers away from the O-line. Maybe Hitchens would start to show why he was a big time free agent. Then, on some plays, especially 3rd down, we could overload one side by adding Ford or Houston. And since Sutton likes to put LBs in pass coverage, imagine having Ford at the line, sometimes dropping into zone, or picking up the tight end, and sometimes being the 5th or 6th pass-rusher.

This could cause confusion for the offensive line, because it would make it much harder to account for Ford or Houston, because they would be unsure if they were rushing or dropping back.

And it would not only create chaos if they did rush the passer, but imagine the offensive line guessing wrong, and they switch responsibilities and move the protection to Ford's or Houston's side, which could potentially lead to Jones or Bailey being unblocked.

KPass could rotate through at defensive end. Speaks could play a more natural position at defensive end. He is listed at like 280+ and that's just too big to be a linebacker. Jenkins could rotate at the tackle positions.

Shoot, I just think we are far more suited for the 4-3. Hell, with all those guys rotating through on the D-line, it could create more snaps for guys like KPass and even Dorian O'Daniel.

I am imagining those 4 beasts with their hands in the dirt, Ford, Houston, and Hitchens lurking close to the line, dropping in and out, confusing the O-line, and then the twists and stunts on blitzes. There would be more opportunities to disguise blitzes too, so maybe in a 2-minute situation like the end of the Patriots game, we could sell out and send the kitchen sink at slow ass Tom Brady. The outcome couldn't be any worse than Gronk catching a long pass as he is being covered by a dude that just joined the team.

Anyway, other than Sutton sucking for the basis of being fired during the season, getting someone who could coach an aggressive 4-3 would be a huge plus. Now, as to who that new DC could be, that is easily more debatable than which scheme, 3-4 vs 4-3, we should run.

One thing I noticed is that there is a lot of alignment confusion and the team rarely looks gap sound. Ragland is constantly moving and shifting.

You wonder if a simplified 1 Gap system is the way to go.

I don't think its realistic to essentially play 6 defensive linemen in your base package.

They run a 1 gap system now. switching to a even front isn't a bad idea, but they do not have the linebackers to cover. Ragland and hitchens seem slow to hit the gaps and can't get off blocks.

this. I think one possible change that might make sense would be run a lot of 4-2-5 . It should help in the run game as they have less gaps to read and less free OL to swallow them up and should help cover backs/TE's with the extra DB. You could also play O'Daniel some as a hybrid LB/DB which is almost a 4-3. Also, you can keep your DE's fresh rotating with Speaks and Kpass, Ford and Houston on passing downs... 3 corners and 2 S. You can have a larger personnel grouping with O'Daniels and the big line, and a lighter personnel grouping where you have Ford and Houston on the field as DE's along with Bailey and Jones inside and your 5 best cover guys in the secondary on obvious passing downs. And all sorts of in-between.

I believe the Chiefs will have a good draft this year and that Veach will begin the process of getting the defense right and silencing his critics.
