The State of ChiefsPlanet Broadband

I just had to renew my internet contract with CenturyLink this week. While I'm irritated that their price went up, I'm now up to 80 Mbps, which I can't complain about. (That said, I hardly know why I need more than about 10 Mbps for what I do, but that's beside the point.)

So just for fun, here's a poll about broadband internet.

It’s cable. Speeds can vary wildly based on load.

But the government forces that company to license out space on that landline to other companies at a reasonable price and they end up with a competitive market for broadband.

Alternately, you can have the America model of consolidated companies that aren't regulated and have some of the highest prices and worse speeds in the rich world.
We actually had something similar to the European mode you mentioned after the Bell breakup. Most of the CLEC’s (competitive local exchange carriers, the guys leasing lines) now owned by one of the large ILEC’s (incumbent local exchange carriers, the guys that own the lines). Consolidatated pretty much right out of existence.

At the end of the day, I’m pretty pessimistic. The government and these big companies have too many mutual interests to actually fix anything.

I just did the test a couple times and got 17-18 Mbps download speed, for which I pay $65/month from the cable company. (Wichita/cox)
We stream to 2 and sometimes 3 devices and seldom have glitches.
I would always like to find cheaper service - Cox has repeatedly pissed me off over the years.

I tried looking up available speeds on the Cox site, but somehow they have it filtered so they only show packages that are upgrades/pricier than what you currently have. The cheapest it showed me was 100 Mbps for $87 (after introductory price expires)

I went to their store and asked what internet speed/cost combos they had and they had one at 10 Mbps and the next at 30 Mbps (which was the same price I was already paying) so I just doubled my speed at no additional cost.

I just tested it at 35.85 Mbps down, 3.08 up.

The guy told me some lame story of how it would be so tedious to hunt through all the customers speeds and upgrade them when they change packages. I call BS - some programming could do that...but he did make the change for me without too much bother.

I know some of you have community broadband, if you like it you might want to let your politicians know. https://motherboard.vice.com/en_us/a...ource=vicefbus

Quote:
The Trump FCC has declared towns and cities that vote to build their own broadband networks an “ominous threat to the First Amendment.”

The claims were made last week during a speech given at the telecom-funded Media Institute by FCC Commissioner Mike O’Rielly. In his speech, O’Rielly insinuated, without evidence, that community owned and operated broadband networks would naturally result in local governments aggressively limiting American free speech rights.

“I would be remiss if my address omitted a discussion of a lesser-known, but particularly ominous, threat to the First Amendment in the age of the Internet: state-owned and operated broadband networks,” claimed O’Rielly.

More than 750 such networks have been built in the United States in direct response to a lack of meaningful broadband competition and availability plaguing America. Studies have routinely shown that these networks provide cheaper and better broadband service, in large part because these ISPs have a vested interest in the communities they serve.

In his speech, O’Rielly highlighted efforts by the last FCC, led by former boss Tom Wheeler, to encourage such community-run broadband networks as a creative solution to private sector failure. O’Rielly subsequently tried to claim, without evidence, that encouraging such networks would somehow result in government attempts to censor public opinion.

No one here works for NASA?
Their 91 gb is a myth sort of.

The reality behind this claim is that NASA had done a test where it achieved 91 Gbps. The test was done between the SC13 supercomputer and NASA’s Servers in Goddard. But it is important to note that this test involved only these 2 Machines, so it is actually just LAN(Local Area Network). The internet we use is made possible through WAN and MAN(Wide and Metropolitan Area Network). LAN involves only some devices in the local area whereas MAN and WAN constitute networks of big regions.
