We need to extend Alex Smith

Alex played the game of his life and he was BETRAYED by the defense

Alex Smith dropped 44 points on the Colts and somehow still lost. Alex is a hero. 44 points can win you a SUPERBOWL. What happened to the best defense in the league? They sure weren't out there tonight. You could cut all of them and it wouldn't matter. What matters is having Alex.

It's not all that really matters. It's not cruel, it's just wrong.

Neither stats nor W/L can be looked at in a vacuum. If Peyton Manning throws an 80 yard touchdown in a blowout win, but the pass was a four yard screen that Demariyus took to the house... I'm not giving that pass more credit than Alex's bomb to Avery in a loss. I'm just not.

Having said that, Alex threw 23 TD in the regular season, but five of them came in one game. There were five games where he failed to throw a single touchdown, despite winning the game. I'm not giving him more credit in those wins than I am for Andrew Luck's 326 yd, 4 TD, 0 INT loss to the Bengals.

We have no choice. We only have a 2-3 year window and then its closed. Flowers/Hali/DJ/Charles will be on the decline. We cant draft and develop.

Smith is going to get $100 million contract. $52-55 million guaranteed. $17-$18 million per year.

It's not right, its way too much money but thats the going rate.

What we need to do is front load the contract like the Bears did with Cutler so you can get out of it after 3-4 years if Smith goes south.

It would be nice if a few of LAST year's draft picks also made a contribution.

By far our best draft pick has been Alex Smith.

Fisher
Kelce
Nico Johnson
Sanders Commings
Kush
Catapano

We really need at least two of those guys to pan out.

Yeah, that happens when you know your defense can't stop anyone and you have to score 30 points to even have a chance.

You should stick to Twitter updates, because your Football IQ is low.
Without Romo they'd be a 3-4 win team?

You say this regardless of the QB who would be playing in place of him... what a weird statement.

The more I think about this, the more I think Alex will get hefty contract, but the actual guaranteed money will be toned down to the numbers I said before.

Feel free to give a list of available QB's that you think could win 5+ games without any help from the defense.

I'll wait.

Using wins and losses a a stat for or against a qb isn't really justifiable in the nfl. Smith was a better qb in the second half of the season, and we lost more games.

It's not usually ok to say on cp, because it was said for cassel, but maybe smith just does need a few more weapons. Obviously he's not ever gonna be manning, but I don't see any reason not to put him in the same class as Eli or flacco.

Maybe Djln and urban Meyer were right. Once he becomes ultimately confident and comfortable in a system, he'll take off. The more reps he got in Reid's offense, the better he got.

Hell, maybe it's a perfect marriage. Maybe he is e perfect fit for Reid's offense and Reid is he perfect coach for smith.

If that's the case, I don't see any reason to not sign him to a deal, while we continue to look for the elite guy. We've seen smith is good enough to win when it counts, and actually seems to be at his best when the chips are down. I'm pretty excited about him going forward at this point.

I think this is why people are against a long extension.

This roster has a ton of holes, and not a lot of money under the cap. Do you see them taking a QB in R1 or R2 any time soon if AS is extended?

I don't.

I'm not sure the cap situation we will be in by march. I'd say it will look different by then, but I agree.

I really couldn't answer that yet tho. Based in their history of drafting, probably not. But, that said, if smith is what I said he could be, I really wouldn't care short term. I guess it will depend on the contract. If it's prohibitive to us adding more talent, it gets muddy.

Something we have seen some of, but not a lot of is player development with this franchise. We do have holes, but you're always gonna have holes. We've gotta start developing more of these under the radar guys.

Absolutely this.

Seems like a lot of teams find solid players/stars with their late round picks and UDFA's. I can't remember the last late round/UDFA guy of ours that is on a level of a Burfict, Cruz, Welker, Romo, etc.
