Before Sunrise, 1994: an American man meets a French woman on a train from Spain to Paris. They strike up a conversation and are kind of digging each other and the guy (whose flight back to America departs from Vienna) asks the girl to spend the day and night with him in Vienna. She does. The film is this fantastic look into conversation and love. These characters have a full, realistic romantic arc in the course of one day. 100% of the scenes are Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy having one-on-one conversation.
Before Sunset, 2004: set ten years later, the two characters from Sunrise catch up in Paris. The film lasts less than an hour and a half, which is how much time the two have together before Ethan Hawke has to get to the airport. Arguably better than the first film, there are all sorts of concerns over maturation and growing up and missed connection and resentment and the way we never really say exactly what we mean. |

If I remember correctly, I saw Before Sunrise when the hype for Before Sunset started. So, probably like 2002. Then, of course, I watched Before Sunset. Wonderful flicks that I really need to watch again.

Hmmm...
The movie Sideways came up as a recommendation when I added those two flicks. Is it any good? |

Sideways is perhaps my favorite film of last decade. It is pitch-perfect, IMO.

The chick flick label gets applied to romcoms or romantic dramas that don't ring true. |

I very seldom buy DVD movies, but I do buy concert DVD's and have about 250. Sideways is the only film DVD I've bought in the last 2 years, I've probably seen it at least 30 times. It's one of the movies I can never get tired of seeing again just like Raising Arizona or Fargo to name a couple. Sideways is a great buddy flick and made me a big fan of Paul Giamatti and also Thomas Haden Church.
