Battle for the top two AFC seeds

The current standings:

1. 10-2 New England
2. 9-3 Pittsburgh
3. 8-4 Kansas City
4. 7-5 Jacksonville
5. 9-3 New York
6. 8-4 Baltimore.

Remaining tough games for New England:

Chicago, Green Bay, Miami

Remaining tough games for Baltimore:

Houston, New Orleans

Remaining tough games for New York:

Miami, Pitt, Chicago

Remaining tough games for Pitt:

New England, Baltimore, New York

Remaining tough games for KC:

San Diego, Tennessee

Notice that the other contenders on this list are going to play each other. A lot. It's entirely possible these teams could cannibalize each other while we sit back and laugh and reap the reward.

If the Chiefs take care of business and beat the losers on their schedule we could very well claim a first-round bye.

Yeah, you can't rule out Tennessee, Miami, or Houston at this point. All of these teams are going to beat the crap out of each other from this point on. Too many good teams playing each other, somebody is going to take a fall.

Meanwhile, we're in our own little world playing pretty much division games and the NFC West from this point forward.

It's pretty weird.

We need to have a good game against Tennessee and prove we're not a bunch of kindergartners.

I think what we need is for Haley to reconsider what he thinks a bold move is.

I know that earlier in the season we did less stupid $3it like going for it on 4th down with questionable play calls and more things like calling trick plays.

I know, trick plays aren't something to build an offense around, and they're risky as well, but an incompletion or sack on 1st/2nd/3rd down is not the same as one on 4th.

When he ran the punt team out and then switched them with the offense. BRILLIANT. I don't know if I've ever seen that.

And with our reeruned-sick running game could you imagine what Casshole could gain on the "Bono bootleg" play?

I think we need to use our running game to make us unpredictable. Make the other team worry about what the **** we're going to do on 1st and goal. Do we pound it down their throats? Send our LB out as a TE for a play action TD? QB draw? HB pass?

If we could have Haley with just a sprinkle of Gailey...

I also see them possibly making the playoffs as a Wild Card simply because all the other teams play each other, thus some will have to lose while KC sits back and wins games against lesser opponents. Had anyone told me this before the season, I'd have called them CRAZY. Come to think of it - I did...

Also, beating Denver will be "tougher" than it appears...

KC goes 10 - 6, we win the AFC West, there will be NO wild card team from the AFC West!

Yeah, I'd say we're lucky to earn the wild-card really. I just think KC's about to hit the wall here pretty quick.

Thanks for pointing that out, jerkoff. Apparently you've forgotten how well getting a first round bye has worked out for us in the past. And I seriously doubt if any of those teams would have let an 0-6 Buffalo squad take them to overtime at Arrowhead.

Let's worry about actually GETTING TO THE PLAYOFFS before annointing ourselves Super Bowl Champs based on wins against five shitty teams.

Baltimore let a 0-5 team score 30 and take them to overtime in Baltimore...

How about you worry about what you want to worry about and leave the rest of us to worry about what we want to worry about?

I don't care what has happened to previous Chiefs teams. I'd much rather have a first round bye than not have one.

Well, gee whiz, patty, if you feel that way, why'd you bother to quote me in the first place?
It's election day. Shouldn't you and the rest of the politards be humping each other over in DC?

And if you don't have a team capable of winning a playoff game, a first round bye is just an embarrassment.

That's conventional wisdom because the West is weak, but take a look at Oakland's and KC's schedule, compared to the other AFC playoff contenders, and you'll see that it is possible.

AFC West has the easier schedule this year by far. Being in last place also helps. Keep in mind that this is a great year to try to steal a high seed in the AFC playoffs if any team from the AFC West can.

Next year, if there is a NFL season, the worm in theory turns. Assuming they stick to the same rotation, and ignoring the complexities of adding two more games, the Chiefs would draw the AFC East and the NFC North instead of the AFC South and NFC West that you have this year. KC also won't have the benefit of a last place schedule, which affects (under the current system) only two games a year, but that's still 12.5% of your schedule being against, say, the Buffalo Bills instead of the New England Patriots, and the Cleveland Browns against the Ravens/Steelers, or whatever.

Right, scheduling differences mean everything this year. The AFC North and East are going to pound the crap out of each other. With the AFC West playing the relatively mediocre NFC West this year, that gives them a definite advantage. Small, but definite. Add KC's last place schedule, which affects two games, and there's another definite advantage.

I'm not overly concerned with the playoffs at this point, however, the '99 Rams only played two games against teams with winning records on their way to the SB before the playoffs, or some absurd number like that.

In the end, it doesn't matter how you earn the bye.
