Got to meet the daughter's boyfriend...he came to visit for 3 days. His main purpose...to get our blessings as he wants to propose to my daughter sometime in the spring. Very nice young man....very responsible....already has a job lined up after he graduates in the spring.
Wife and I gave each other the Silver Pass to DisneyWorld this year....got a few smaller things, mostly stuff that are need items more than want items. At my age.....(like some have mentioned on here) I am more about giving than receiving. Do the little things anonymously and get a real joy out of it. |

Wife and I are currently building a house so we weren’t going to do Christmas for each other but the wife had a good year with work so we broke down a little and got ourselves a pair of tickets to see the eagles with Chris Stapleton in Dallas. Gonna fly down and spend a few days there.

Before the kiddo, vacations were a nice thing to do an call Christmas/Birthdays. Now vacations revolve around the kiddo. Doing things to the house definitely are wants not needs. And if it is something (like a dining room table this year) that we need, it ends up being a model or level of fancy or whatever that we want and not what we need. From the pragmatic perspective, we are just crap gift givers. So there is no point in wasting money on it. So we don't. We are self aware enough to know that the awesomeness of a gift is only loosely correlated to the amount we love each other. And...We are both good with it so we don't **** with it. It's not a trap either. If I were to go get something for her after we agreed on not, she'd be pissed. |

I mentioned earlier that my wife and I don't do gifts any more, and just spend time together.
However, my family has always exchanged gifts, which is a huge waste of resources. Nobody lives near anybody, so no one knows what's wanted or needed, so we all thrash around and buy stuff that's never right. I was thrilled this year when my mother suggested that we not exchange gifts, and I jumped on that wagon. All systems perfect. Do some well wishing and everyone's better off. Then late last week I got a gift in the mail from my sister. I say, "hey, what's up with this?" She says, "Oh, I thought that was just for the parents, not you." No, no, no. No one was supposed to give gifts. Then on Friday I got a Christmas card from my parents, and it contained a small check. I say, "Hey, what's the deal? We talked about this and agreed, no gifts." She said, "Well, I got a gift from your sister, so I had to give her one back, and I didn't want to give her one and not give you one." So now I'm the only person who didn't buy gifts for the others, and I look like the Grinch even though I'm the only one who's upholding the agreement.

There used to be, maybe still is a round table in the back room that we held on Friday late nights for many years. They have a rep of grooming pub owners and Guinness employees. Family owned for 40 years.

Yes. YES! If you agree to not give gifts, don't give gifts. Otherwise, one innocent person ends up looking like the Grinch just because he's the one who upheld the agreement! I'm not evil!

Then if you buy someone a $20 coffee mug, which would be a really good mug, and someone drops Chiefs tickets on you, you’re the asshole because all they got was this ****ing mug. Kids need gifts. Adults do not. |
