What I thnk likely happened here is SF and KC came to a tentative agreement, and then SF leaked it to try and stir up more suitors that may be sitting back waiting for an outright release. And I'll reiterate, SF has no leverage. If KC gave up any more than a pittance, they got screwed.

It's not the chiefs leaking it why would they say 49ers are telling teams it's done?

ASmith may be on his last contract. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see him sign a new contract with more years at a pay cut. Surely he's already made the lion's share of the guaranteed money from his current contract. Getting cut from his next team could be the end of his NFL income. Smith may want to be a starter and paid like one, but 2 stints of unsuccessful FA should tell him that may not be practical.

This gives the leverage to the teams that have those QBs. In the case of the niners, they have less leverage than the Eagles do with Foles, because here in a short while, they'll have to eat a large amount of money to either keep (and trade) Smith, or let him go and lose the compensation they are looking for with draft picks. In this case Philly has the top tier bargaining chips and can set the market and also play their strongest hand for the most compensation, as teams will give up more for Foles right now due to his youth and contract, than they will for Smith. So, naturally, the niners want to announce that they have a deal that is all but done, to take away that advantage that Philly has, and Philly has been popping contradictory news out all week to drive up the Foles price to devalue Smith. Enter Kansas City, who wants foles at a bargain, Philly who won't go for that bargain, and the Niners who desperately want to get some kind of compensation for Smith before they are forced to release him. Now Kansas City has the upper hand. They have the first pick in the draft and can get Geno all day, but ultimately have the final say on whether or not the Niners get any compensation for Alex since they are the only team that can carry his cap space in a trade AND give the niners the compensation they'd be "okay" with taking for him, without having to restructure his contract. A majority of you guys are out there seriously undervaluing the Chiefs leverage at this point. Stay calm and watch this unfold in March, you'll be surprised how well we clean this up. |

What if the Chiefs trade for A. Smith, and still draft Geno? Would everyone be cool with that?

Everyone's freaking out about us getting Alex Smith and that somehow signaling us not drafting Geno. I am of the mindset that trading for Alex is actually more of a precursor for us drafting Geno, than if we didn't trade for Alex. It makes total sense to knock out a starting QB the first week of FA right before the draft, and then go get your future guy who you might not be sure can start today, but know he has the special skills to play very well once he LEARNS your specific offense. Geno is going to play the WCO very well, and is arguably going to be the #1 WCO schemed QB coming out of this draft. Trading for a WCO QB to play stop gap is just textbook ass covering. |

no problem with bringing AS here via 4th round or later pick. If the 9ers insist on more than I say step back and let someone else ( who is desperate ) have him or wait till he AS has been released.
