Movies

Yeah, so I saw a lot of movies this weekend.

Elizabeth: The Golden Age - Mediocre, at best. Slow and dragged on. Shorten it to 2 hours and it's golden. It's not, so it fails.

Michael Clayton - Amazing. Everything about it is awesome. However, it's VERY complex and mind bending. You have to think, so be prepared. I still feel like I'm missing key details of exactly what happened. Gotta see it again.

Across the Universe - Perfect is one word that comes to mind. It just works. And, contrary to many people I bet, the movie is best viewed sober. Trust me.

Hell I couldn't have named the author off the top of my head before you mentioned it.

Nice. Sounds like I definitely need to check this one out.

I rewatched Kingdom of Heaven. This time I opted for the Director's Cut.

IMMENSELY better. So much so, that, as I was told prior, you haven't seen Kingdom of Heaven if you haven't seen this cut.

Agreed.

The only problem is it's like Gone With The Wind long now. I started watching it around 10:30 on a weeknight. Big mistake.

True but I didn't mind it one bit. Much, much more fleshed out characters, which was a major gripe of mine in the Theatrical. Especially Liam's character.

Also, that was one hell of a cast. Even Michael Sheen joined the party as the priest in the beginning.

Watched Sin City again. Love it and heard that they're making another one.

The original Tron is coming to HD Movies in the next week or two. I'm pretty sure that I haven't seen it since it was in the theaters.

Last Airbender getting absolutely scathing reviews. Most scathing reviews I've seen in a while. And not comically scathing (ala Sex and the City 2).

Sample:

Quote:
Where to start with this one? How about this: If any movie ever warranted a class-action lawsuit against the filmmakers, it’s The Last Airbender.
Quote:
The Last Airbender is an agonizing experience in every category I can think of and others still waiting to be invented.
Quote:
The Last Airbender is dreadful, an incomprehensible fantasy-action epic that makes the 2007 film The Golden Compass, a similarly botched adaptation of a beloved property from another medium, look like a four-star classic.
Quote:
Let's just be honest: M. Night Shyamalan is an idiot.

Too bad, I thought it looked good.

Also, this was a good read on their racist casting: http://splinterend.tumblr.com/post/7...0/facepainting

Has any director in history milked ONE GOOD MOVIE as much and as long as Shyamalan? ****. Everything he's made since Sixth Sense has sucked - the only variance is the degree of suckage.

It's racist to insist that only members of a specific race can adequately play characters of that race. We don't have problems when happy actors play depressed characters or when tea-totalers play drunks. Or when black actresses play blue aliens for that matter.

Yeah, I thought it was pretty thin. They're called actors. They're playing a role.

Exactly. And I completely forgot about gay actors playing straight characters and vice versa.

Except when Paramount puts out fliers saying "Caucasian or other ethnicities" it seems pretty overt.

Also, I object to the two examples you've used. Completely different.

That casting call sounds pretty inclusive to me.

My examples are different, but far from completely different. The important factor is that actors play roles and wear costumes and make-up to create the desired appearance. The only really essential qualification is the ability to pull it off.

I don't think that's overt. It's open to all ethnicities.

Perhaps. Though I still think this is an obvious case. The Hero-Hero-Hero-Villian picture in the article is game, set, match for me.

Correct, but "Caucasian" would fall under "all ethnicities". I don't see how you can miss the overt placement of Caucasian before " or any other ethnicities".
