Chris Jones pending [contract] situation

OK, so I was in the camp earlier in the season (right or wrong) that he was a great pass rusher inside but struggled against the run inside.

Yeah, I was wrong.

He's improved on that a lot this year, he's a complete all around player. He dominated Gabe Jackson and company inside against Oakland. That's not easy. He was splitting doubles, making dudes look foolish.

You've gotta keep that guy around. He's a top 10 defensive player in the league at this point, it's tough to let those guys walk.

What is everything thinking now?

I would tag and trade, to be honest.

Nnadi and Saunders are playing well there and really helped plug up the interior run issues from a DLine standpoint. I think you bring back Pennel on a small deal and add a draft pick there. A damned solid crop of DTs coming out in the draft this year.

I think the resources that will be required to retain Jones could be better used. Put the resources into other spots that are a little light in the draft, such as DE, and retain guys like Ogbah. Maybe go after a good LB or a CB harder in FA.

Can't let him walk. Football is won in the trenches and linemen are crucial on both sides of the ball. If our O-line were any good we wouldn't be talking about the Chiefs' offensive issues.

So when we have a good defensive lineman like we do in Jones, don't let him walk.

Chris Jones is like the bear from the Revenant; he savages the opponent.

I am open to trade if someone wants to make an absurd offer, but I am very comfortable paying him.

Mahomes is not giving us a “home town discount”. I’m sure in history it has happened, but can’t think of an example right now.

Brady has kinda sorta done it with the Pats (at least somewhat because his wife's income dwarfs his), but even then it's mostly been around lots of team-friendly restructuring.

Beyond that, the issue is just that "team-friendly" deals are more in the range of 10% than 50%, so it's not as much of an impact as people would like it to be. If Pat had an offer on the table for $40m from another team, I can buy that he'd take $35m to stay with the Chiefs, but there's no way in hell he's taking $20m or whatever.

Stupid phone. Didn’t mean to thumbs down this. My bad. And I agree.

What I’d like to see is the old bag of cash trick. Plus get him in on a producing well. For like a grand or something reeruned.

And then make press releases about how big of a deal it is that he took a discount. Get him positive PR, cash money and an oil well or 30.

That's a bad idea. You gotta make sure the player you resign will still work hard even after getting rich. How many times does a player get a big contract and all of a sudden his play suddenly falls off?

Ask the Redskins who signed Haynesworth to a $100 million contract if it is okay to not sign dlineman to big contracts.

You could say that about any player. What about Mahomes? Should we not pay him because he would suddenly be 'rich'? You discuss the Redskins and Haynesworth but Haynesworth had a reputation prior to the Redskins signing him. After he signed it, before he even played for DC, many were excoriating the Redskins because they could see that Haynesworth was going to do this. You are correct that it is a risk for any player to get a big contract and have his play diminish. Jones, though, has been solid for us for a few years. His play this year is in line with the previous years.

It is a risk but the question is not whether it's a risk but whether its a reasonable risk. Given the way Jones has played and how Veach has generally structured cap-friendly deals,* I think we should keep him. Players of his calibre do not come along frequently.

* I say this and someone will point to someone whose contract sucks, like Sammy Watkins. But we can void Watkins' contract after this year and take a relatively small cap hit, unlike Berry or Houston. All in all, Veach has managed the cap better than Dorsey.
