Looks like Spagnuolo [favorite for] DC

Former Giants’ DC and HC Steve Spagnuolo has emerged as the favorite to replace Bob Sutton as the Chiefs’ defensive coordinator, per sources.

Spagnuolo and Andy Reid worked together in Philadelphia, share the same agent and have a mutual respect for each other’s work.

However, on the other side of the coin, the more experienced DC may be more set in their ways and perhaps less flexible. Wonder if Andy would entertain someone like Spags for quality control (personnel) and someone younger, hungrier and more relatable to the players for scheme and player development?

I knew the guy was going to be off the charts bad as a head coach when KC hired him. He's been a solid independent thinking DC despite having horrendous qualities for a HC.

If Spags was the best candidate the clean up the turds, I'd be all for it. I just don't think he is, by a long shot.

If we had a unit already put together and we just need a guy to come in and run it as is, I'd be all for it. I don't think we have that at all, though.

If I was certain he was the right guy for my squad and could get his staff in place, I'd cough up one of the two 2nd rounders.

I just think it's silly when people start making ironclad predictions about the future success of a coordinator.

No one can predict anything. They could draft the next Reggie White in the fourth round. He could take one look at Speaks and know exactly how to use him.

He could walk in and say "we gotta cut half these starters." No one knows anything. We don't even know it's going to be Spagnolo.

BTW the correct pronunciation is "Span-YO-lo". In italian, GN becomes a NY like in "annual"

They aren’t going to hire anyone that’s going to want to cut half of the guys on defense.

They are going to hire someone that can get this defense to help us win a championship next year and are going to throw all of their resources at doing exactly that.

Most of the draft picks and FA dollars will go towards making this defense something that will help us beat the Patriots in the playoffs.

In that respect, Spag makes some sense because I think a lot of the players here would benefit from a scheme/philosophy change to his perceived style.

Most of these guys on defense are good when their job is simplified and they are able to attack/be aggressive.

I agree. I think the biggest indictment of Sutton was that he lost the confidence of the locker room. A competent DC who can get guys motivated and actually bring rookies/2nd year players along quickly is going to be a godsend.

You guys could make a list of names better than I.

The principle isn’t without precedence although on the other side of the ball. Andy had Brad Childress as his “Offensive Coordinator” in 2016 (although it was somewhat on paper only). In 2017, he made Childress his Assistant Head Coach.

If he plays to more of a 4-3 then he's already found a better use for Speaks. Which I still think begs the question... Was it the Chiefs plan all along to consider a gradual change to 4-3.
