2019 Free agency Thread

We don't really have one of these yet, so figured we could use this as a place to discuss potential free agent acquisitions and what we would like to look for them to bring in.

If any of you guys are interested, heres a good place to do some research.

Bleacher Report article has us trading Houston to Colts for a 3rd, and sending our 1st and 2nd to Jax for J Ramsey. Add a Berry restructure and E Thomas signing and we’re back in business. Let Hunt return after rehab and we’re SB bound.

I agree that the stars would have to align for us to get a 3rd for Houston, work out something beneficial with Berry, and acquiring a star in his prime. Not to mention bringing back Hunt, but that’s one hell of an offseason!

Remember the Aqib Talib trade to the Rams for a 5th round pick. That's a trade like that that I have in mind.

Patrick Peterson.

Only 2 years left on his deal. That’s not worth a 2nd IMO.

It absolutely is. 2 years for a premier corner who we could resign. That's a super bowl team with pat pete last year

He was 32, his cap hit was $11m last year and even then the Broncos were dumb to only get a 5th for him. You won't see a trade like that for the Chiefs.

What does $21m have to do with anything? He's suggesting the Chiefs trade away a pick to get a corner, not trade away Houston to get a pick.

FA names I would like to see the Chiefs consider:

Highest priority
S - Landon Collins (if available - I would also offer our 2nd (#61) this year and a 2020 3rd round pick to acquire him).
S - Adrian Amos
S- Earl Thomas

* I think it is imperative the Chiefs land one of these three in order to stabilize the middle of the secondary. The draft can supplement this, but the biggest potential splash comes at the safety position.

Corner - Darqueze Dennard - solid vet who can defend #2 receivers adequately. Scheme versatile and should not break the bank.
Corner - Bryce Callahan - may be pricey after a solid 2018 season in Chicago, but he competes and is an ascending player.
Corner - Bashaud Breeland - after the FA tour drama last year, he settled in and has a decent campaign in Green Bay. Probably won’t break the bank and may fit well in Spagnuolo’s attacking scheme where he can press/man cover often.

*Sheer attrition will force the Chiefs to add at Corner given the fact that Scandrick and Nelson will likely be allowed to walk. I expect a corner to be selected early in the Draft with the idea that they will compete for a starting job come the fall. There still is a need for an outside corner to compete with Ward and bring some needed depth to the position group.

OLB - KJ Wright - The price point might be a bit too high for the Chiefs with Wright, and he might be a tad on the high mileage side to warrant a serious investment. But, he would bring leadership and savvy to a 4-3 deployment.
OLB - Shaquil Barrett - Barrett is not great at any one thing but he is generally good at everything. He can move in space and has proven to be a decent blitzer when called upon.

* again, the 2019 draft promises a lot of depth and talent at the linebacker position. I anticipate that the Chiefs will come away with a solid linebacker prospect that can contribute in year one. That being said, some good veteran leadership added to our roster that is undergoing a scheme change is never a bad idea.

* I will withhold commenting too much on defensive line and/or edge players too much until the fate of players like Justin Houston and Dee Ford are known for sure. Again, there are attractive players in the draft throughout the first few rounds that have a lot of great pro promise. Some stopgap free agent names to perhaps ease the loss of Houston or ford could be Connor Barwin, Chris Long, Brandon Graham. If you want to make a splash, you maybe target Trey Flowers, or Frank Clark. Plenty of interior D line options to replace the likes of an Allen Bailey too.

* I will not speculate too much on offensive free agents because I believe overall there is not a lot of value, and I don’t expect to see a lot of turnover on that side of the ball for the Chiefs. The Minnesota Centers are mildly intriguing because they could maybe be had cheaper than Morse, while being as productive. I think running back and receiver can be addressed in the draft, along with even tight end as the free-agent options are poor.

There are three Eagles players that have zero dead money attached to their contracts right now. The Eagles enter next season with only about $16 million in salary cap space. They have some work to do replenishing their backfield and defensive secondary along with a defensive front that is ageing.

Agholor, Kelce, Peters: are one of these players about to get released? If so, I’m making a move....

I don't think you realize that after we tag Ford and hold our "Rookie Pool" we are looking at about $5M in space to play in FA unless they can get something worked out with Houston and or Berry.
