Always order the smallest size. It's the logical best value and the restaurant knows what it's doing. 65 67.71%
Order a medium soda with expectations of getting a refill. It's the compromise that is most fair to both parties in combination. 19 19.79%
Order a size that approximates your expected need, even if it means paying more for a large. 5 5.21%
Don't order a soda in a self-refill environment. It's too fraught with ethical minefields. 2 2.08%

The ethics of get-it-yourself refills.

I was in a restaurant tonight, and it had a system in place that I like. They set the soda machine out in the dining room, and you can just go get your own refill. Getting my own soda refill is one of my key selection criteria for restaurants these days.

However, I have a conundrum. When I order a soda, I'm usually asked if I want a small, medium, or large.

Now, think about that for a moment. It's free refills with no shame. I don't have to ask someone for my refills, I just go get them.

So the logical approach here is to always order a small drink, right? Maybe I have to get up sooner to get my refill, but big deal. It burns calories to walk over there.

But at the same time, I feel guilty ordering a small soda if I'm already figuring that I'll get a refill. Essentially, I'm getting a large soda for the price of a small. Is this ethical? If I know that I want more than the XX ounces in a small size, should I order the size that closest approximates my need? Or should I look out for my own self-interest and always order the smallest size at the lowest cost?

Poll coming. You can get up and vote on it yourself.

It’s been 10 years since I have, and I can tell you it more than .05 material per drink.

I think our material cost with cup was around .50-.60 per 32oz soda. That’s what Pepsi charged.

Prefer coke though, but their service out here sucked.m

Beer is a huge profit item.

Pepsi was ripping you off.

I only get soft drinks from the older fountains with mutiple nozzles. you couldn't pay me to use one of those touch-screen kiosks with a single nozzle. those things never get cleaned.

It does for me through the drive through. If I'm paying $1 for a large or a small, I might as well order the big one regardless if I'm going to drink it.

Like someone said earlier, the mark up on pop is so high even at $1 per large they are making like $0.95 profit on it. Then, with the profit margin so high even at $1, when you go to a place like Burger King or Wendy's and they charge you $2.50+ for a large, you wonder how they sleep at night. Probably on a bed of money, that's how.

Went to Panera last night, as I do every Wednesday night, to meet three buddies and solve the world's problems for a couple hours. I ordered the largest drink, as I always do, only because I intended to refill it. After all these years, refilling still seems like cheating to me, so I ask permission before doing so. I don't ask every time I visit an establishment, but I ask the first time and assume that answer for any later visits.

Rest easy in the future with the knowledge that if an establishment makes their soda fountain self-serve, refills are an implied part of the deal. STOP ASKING PERMISSION LIKE A SCARED LITTLE GIRL. You're an alpha male, start acting like it!

I'm scheduling a therapy session now to deal with the negative inner voice that was triggered by your aggressive and hurtful post.

I mean, I’d assume you’re kidding, but you just told us you meet up with your buddies for dinner at Panera once a week.

The others who were at this gathering will all offer affidavits under penalty of felony denying that dinner even happened.

I had a big drink. I like big drinks.

I rarely drink a soda when I go out to eat. If they don’t carry fresh brewed tea I usually opt for water. TBH I would rather have milk than a soda if it came down to it.

If it comes down to it, I'd rather get taken down by soda than the Viet Cong. It's less heroic, but more satisfying.
