Old performers...Gordon Lightfoot

Not sure many care or even know who Gordon Lightfoot is...

Wife and I went to St Joe last night to see this 81 year old legendary songwriter do a concert. What a thrill for us who remember him from our days in the late 60s...

The voice has lost range and his stamina shows some weakness.

But the lyrics and passion for his music and love of his audience was amazing.

If you are not familiar, take some time out and enjoy what music a great songwriter can do and listen to a 12 string guitar in the hands of a master....

I feel blessed to have seen Gordon in person...

I don't know - guess it just comes with age?

Aside from the more obvious John Denver songs, this was one of my favorites:

I heard Denny Matthews say once on a Royals broadcast that Lightfoot is his favorite musician. And yeah, he's frickin' GREAT.

Maybe. Hope he is alive by the time he is supposed to be there.

I like older performers. They come out-do their music-be done.

Boston many years ago played 3 hours and as done. No break.
Eagles took one break.
Phil Collins-did not move from the place where he limped on stage.

I saw the Who last month in Buffalo. Greatly exceeded expectations. I counted three goose bump moments. The funny thing is I saw the Who back in 1989 at the Cotton Bowl along with Stevie Ray Vaughn and The Fabulous Thunderbirds. I remember thinking to myself even then, "I hope these old farts still got it." Turns out it was maybe the best show I'd seen up to that point.

I also saw Jackson Browne a few months ago and he was also very good. So glad I got to see him perform at least once before one of us ceased to exist.

Last year I was lucky enough to see Van Morrison one more time and what a great show he put on. He can still bring it as well as anyone. I love me some Van the Man. One of my two or three favorites all time.

It just goes to show that advancing age doesn't always diminish a great musician's ability to perform at a high level. They may have to adapt but when they still know what they are doing it can be a powerful thing.

I've always loved the old blues masters like John Lee Hooker, Sonny Boy Williamson, Jimmy Witherspoon, etc. without ever once thinking how old they were, just that they were still killing it.

I swear Gordon Lightfoot played in Duluth on an anniversary of the sinking.

Newhart would probably laugh at that joke. His best friend was Don Rickles before he croaked off.
