Nifty to nice, he's a good kicker. Seems like a lot of money (for a kicker), but I'm el cheapo.

Well, he's Catholic. If that makes him a religious kook, then probably 25% of the NFL are kooks too.

His FG to send us to OT in the AFC Championship game was nice. I was so confident he'd nail it and he did. That's as clutch as a kick can get just about. I know I was basically on life support at that point.

Paying for a place kicker I can get behind.

Paying for a punter is ridiculous. We're entering year 5 of 'we should've cut Colquitt' and have overspent by about $15 million over that period.

I agree with this, but it also seems like such a small sample size for Butker to make him one of the highest paid kickers in the league. Who knows, with the new CBA that will be coming soon, Butker could end up looking like a bargain even if he is only good going forward.

Colquitt is still great, but with this Chiefs team, there no good reason to pay him what they are. We could have signed someone off the street for league minimum and it would most likely have no impact on the win total.

I don't know about it being year 5. Colquitt probably won us quite a few games during the Alex Smith Era. He really didn't see a drop in punts until last year. I would say year 2, but an argument could be made for year 3. Not 5. But yeah, there is no need to pay a punter that much with an offense like this.

I'm not getting my panties in a twist over the deal, but... yeah. Never trust kickers. Especially young kickers.

Blair Walsh had a booming leg and was dead on accurate. Until he missed a kick in the playoffs. Now he's a chump replacement-level kicker

Cody Parkey was doing pretty well. Until he wasn't.

Green Bay inexplicably stood by Mason Crosby as he struggled mightily for more than a season. And even then, he's just kind of okay now. Before then, however, he was among the NFL's best kickers.

Knock on wood, I don't think that's going to happen to Butker. But as soon as you think you can get comfortable with a kicker, they'll find a way to **** you over. They always do.

You're right - I was a year off.

2016, when he made $3.6 million - that was the year I was fine with walking away from him. So we'll have paid about $9 million more over those 4 years than I'd have liked to have paid for a punter (and there's still a chance that they make a move on him this fall).

I'm just saying that it adds up. It's why I'm so protective of our cap at all times - I hate the 'have cap, will spend' approach because there are no rollover penalties. If you have it and don't NEED to spend it - don't. Roll it over, get your cap credits out of it and you'll have that much more the following season.

I just don't think a lot of people understand how those rollover dollars work very well. By not having Colquitt all those years, we'd have been able to bank those dollars forward and just keep plowing them into subsequent cap years. Now we'd be sitting on $9-10 million in spare cap that could make things a lot simpler and could've made pursuing someone like Kyle Fuller more feasible last season.

We have the best STs coach in football - you telling me we can't get league average punting out of a rookie or street free agent? Dude built Butker into a premier kicker, he can turn raw clay into something passable as a punter.

I trust bigger kickers more. I know I shouldn't, but with the levers they can bring into play, they can use a simpler motion to generate power.

Simpler = more repeatable. More repeatable = more reliable.

A guy like Santos was always going to make me nervous because he had to be loud to generate his power. Butker's is easy; guy has plus distance on an average leg swing. That means he's not 'overthrowing' so to speak, so his mechanics should stay sound and his accuracy should be all the easier.

It's like so many of us said about Mahomes when we got him - that easy zip on his passes means he doesn't have to gear up to get into windows. When you're not working as hard, you're more precise. Mahomes can make some of those throws more accurately because he's not having to reach back to make them - just a calm, easy release and the ball explodes.

Gimme that tall kicker with easy levers and a simple leg swing and I'll be more confident than I would in most guys.

Okay, I'm also now looking up some Butker stats. The stark difference in the power and awesomeness of our 2018 offense as compared to 2017 even reflects itself in kicking statistics. Lol. Granted, Butker wasn't on the Chiefs for the first 3 games of 2017, so these aren't perfect comparisons, but the differences are so great the extra 3 games probably don't matter.

In 2017, Butker attempted 28 extra points. In 2018, he attempted 69 extra points.

In 13 games of 2017, Butker attempted 42 field goals. In a full 16 games of 2018, he attempted just 27.

He converted 14 more field goals in 2017 vs 2018 (38 vs 24). That's a difference of 42 points. You'd think his total scoring between the two seasons would be insane, but it's actually not. Because he kicked so many freaking extra points in 2018, he's only off by 5 points between the two seasons (142 in 2017 vs 137 in 2018).

So... yeah. Mahomes hates field goals.
