Yes. I want to say that this song became public domain. I think that the Animals just popularized it. I'm not sure if it was before. This is one of the most covered songs due to the rights and not having to request permission. It's one of my favs

Here's what happened.

I'm into the origins of it all, which does mean early jazz, ragtime, blues. So I buy a Lead Belly CD. I put it on and after a few tunes...."there is a house in New Orleans..."......now I knew Huddie Ledbetter had died in 1949, so..???

So I set out to find out the history of "House of the Rising Sun", like most I just assumed it belonged to The Animals.

Clarence Ashley who fits into that Appalachian hillbillie sound recorded the original in 1933. Sometime I knew nothing about, at first.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=147kS8O59Qs

Another song I bet most aren't aware of as being a cover of an older song......Unchained Melody....we think of the Righteous Bros and Bobby Hatfield

I did know House of the Rising Sun was a traditional, but I was unaware that Unchained Melody did not originate with the Righteous Brothers. TIL.

I never wondered about it, accidently found out while looking for something else.

Wiki

Unchained Melody" is a 1955 song with music by Alex North and lyrics by Hy Zaret. North wrote the music as a theme for the little-known prison film Unchained (1955), hence the song title. Todd Duncan sang the vocals for the film soundtrack.[1] It has since become a standard and one of the most often recorded songs of the 20th century, most notably by the Righteous Brothers.[2] According to the song's publishing administrator, over 1,500 recordings of "Unchained Melody" have been made by more than 670 artists, in multiple languages.[3]

In 1955, three versions of the song (by Les Baxter, Al Hibbler, and Roy Hamilton) charted in the Billboard Top 10 in the United States,[4] and four versions (by Al Hibbler, Les Baxter, Jimmy Young, and Liberace) appeared in the Top 20 in the United Kingdom simultaneously, an unbeaten record for any song.[5][6] The song continued to chart in the 21st century, and it was the only song to reach number one with four different recordings in the UK until it was joined by Band Aid 30's "Do They Know It's Christmas?" in 2014.[7][8]

All those on youtube.

Elvis's....Are You Lonesome Tonight.....yep, a cover. Something he was known for early on.

If your old like me you grew up with 45's and albums. The first thing we did was break the cellophane and play the record while reading the cover. I always took note who wrote the music then compared with the band members. with cassettes then cd's and now digital people dont seem to have an interest in who penned the music as much.

Yep, old.

Still into blank tapes because I like to mix, both my vechicles have cassette players. I don't think most people really care about the story behind the music today, I want that CD and the little booklet that comes wit it. I need to know all I can about the music.

Sorry but until a few days ago I didn't know about this place, yep...newbie.

Hit up some mod and check IP addresses, and I have never been banned anywhere.
