The Thinking of Purchasing A Used Car Thread

I figured I’d create this thread rather than hunting down one of the old ones that are specific to a certain make/model.

Finally decided on the make and model last week; and picked this up on Saturday. 2012 with 35k miles; and got it for 16K after all was said and done. I let my wife pretty much do 90% of the negotiation, just chiming in here and there. She did a great job. Initially their offer/net difference was 17k; my wife told them she wanted to be at a net of 15k. we split it, and the deal was done.

Did a search and made a spreadsheet (I'm a nerd like that) of all 4x4 Xterras 2010+ with less than 65k miles in a 225 mile radius and only found probably 30. And probably only 3 in the immediate area. Not sure why there is such a limited market on them used, but oh well. Their price of $22.9k was spot on with market value so it was really just a matter of the trade/offer etc.

We went to Laird Noller in Lawrence and couldn't have been happier. super easy, no hassle/games/bullshit etc. start to finish in probably 2.5-3hrs. hell, they wanted to do a final cleaning of it etc and it was around lunch time; my wife mentioned to me she was hungry and the business manager overheard us - a manager we hadn't even been working with; he whistled for a salesman to bring him the keys to a car, handed them to us and said 'go grab some lunch; this will take about a half hour'.

I would buy again from them for sure.

My brother-in-law bought a new 2004 Liberty that they had for 7 years and 85,000 miles. Never had a single problem with it and when I rode in it right before they traded it off, I was amazed that there wasn't a single squeak or rattle. Still ran and looked like new.

Both of them got shitty mileage, though.
Mrs. Radar drives an ’04 Liberty. We’ve had it since new, it has 93K miles now and the only problem we’ve ever had with it is when the water pump went out about 2 years ago.
Gas mileage does kinda suck though, for a cute ute with a V-6.

Take that Xterra some where and get the frame looked at. I had a friend who bought one and about six months down the line he tried to put towing equipment on it. They said his frame was bent and they couldn't install it, he took it to the dealership he bought it from and they had to refund him all his money. He then bought another one and it was the same deal as before. I don't know if it was just an unlucky two cars but that seems pretty crazy to me.

dang!
thankfully it's certified up to 100k for drive train, and I have a bumper to bumper warranty too.

....though, I'm sure they'd find a way to weasel out of it if push came to shove. lol.

I just bought this 2002 Pontiac Grand Am with my pay check yesterday. Was glad I had 18 hours overtime on it. My check was 701 bucks and the guy was selling it for $700. I tried to talk him down some but he wasn't going to budge as he told me he had others looking at it on Saturday. Well that could have been just a line of bs but I didn't want to give up the opportunity just in case.

Really for 700 bucks I could live with the ding on the side, the car runs great and nice stereo, AC, heater works. I sure can't complain now and don't have to walk to work anymore. I like the color Chiefs red

Kind of stoke to have wheels but am reserved about my excitement as now I got to figure out how to pay all my bills this month. I don't want to get behind anymore I get stressed out if I don't keep with in my budget. I'm well over my budget now lol.

If this car was at a used car dealership I'm sure the asking price would be 2g. So I can live with what I paid.

You've got a newer car than me! And props on getting things in line. You've talked about your struggles on here openly but glad to see you doing well, even as hard as it has been for you. I have an '01 car but it runs great and I like it, so no use just giving it up for something newer/fancier if it gets me to where I am going and it's been paid off for years. I also like paying less than $50 a month on insurance!

Congrats man. You can save even more money if you can do basic car maintenance yourself. I would assume you would be?

I'm not doing as well as I'd like to be but things are 100X better than four years ago.

I just work on every day one day at a time and do my best. Seems to be working for me.

Ya I can do basic car maintenance, but also have a brother that's pretty good mechanic I'm going have him look things over when he gets a chance and probably have him give it a tune up. Over 170k miles. Still a good car imo glad I got it. It's been rough 4 months on foot. It's been tough to get a decent used car with out being screwed over like I did on that Blazer I bought last year.

I think you did great paying cash for a used car. Just make sure the title is in order, most people have no clue as to how/what the title should say and when buying cars from a private party, this is really where you should begin. Make sure the title IS in the seller's name. Make sure there are no liens on the car.

If this car has the v6, just make sure it never over heats. They are aluminum block engines so if you overheat them they go sour pretty fast. If the car is sound mechanically, all you really need to worry about is basic maintenance, change the old religiously, give it a tune up every once in a while, change the belts, hoses, cv boots, breaks, etc. If you maintain it, it should be ok. The biggest problems with Pontiacs are the electrical stuff, power windows, and whatnot, but they don't cost much to fix.
