Anybody have any preferences on who they want to win the Syracuse vs Ohio State game? If I knew for sure that KU was going to win tomorrow I think I'd rather Syracuse win this one even though they are the higher rated seed otherwise I don't really care.

First of all, "best anything over the last whenever" is subjective and should not be used to give awards.

Awards like this are almost entirely subjective. Though if you wanted to judge it statistically, Davis is better in most of the advanced basketball statistics anyway due to his efficiency and defensive presence.

Second, people aren't discounting defense. It's just strange that people all of a sudden got SO obsessed with it this year, to the point that they are going to give a guy who averages 14 and 10 the most prestigious award in the sport (and it only applies to one person, name another player that won any conference player of the year award based mostly on defense). It has never been a factor before, as illustrated by the list of all-time great defenders that never sniffed NPOY. Defensive players have their own award - there isn't an offensive player of the year trophy.

I don't know about anyone else, but I've always been obsessed with it. Defense is the reason KU has been the best program in the country for a decade, it's the reason that KU is still in the tournament, and it's also the reason Davis is the best player in the country.

And as I said, special teams in football has value and wins/loses games, but you don't see great special teams players win MVP or get in the hall of fame.

Defense is half the game in basketball. It makes absolutely no sense to ignore it when evaluating players.
