Supersong Tournament: Round 2, Heat 4. (PICK TWO)

Second verse, same as the first.

In Round Two, I'll put the nominees up in random clumps of five, and you'll pick the TWO musical acts that you would most like, or least hate, to see on the world's biggest stage as the Chiefs face some NFC team next year.

The rules are more or less non-existent. Lobby for anyone you like, post videos for us, and make any arguments against totally insipid groups and rappers. Convince us one way or the other.

My winners:

1. Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. If you didn't know I'd pick Bruce, then you don't know me very well.

2. Quiet Riot. I'm not a huge fan, but it would be a high energy show.

My non-winners.

3. Incubus. I'm more likely to listen to them than Quiet Riot, but they're less of a Super Bowl fit.

4. Foo Fighters. I don't quite get the appeal.

5. Smashing Pumpkins. I'm against violence to gourds.

I voted Bruce and Foo. They seem like the two with the combination of broad appeal and energy for this job. And they both have lead vocalists who didn’t die 10 years ago.

So much for my broad appeal theory. Thanks, Rain Man!

Quiet Riot and Foo Fighters. Quiet Riot just has the arena rock catalog and Dave Grohl puts on a show like few others. Foo Fighters would absolutely kill it in that setting.

Rainmain doesn't like the Foo Fighters because he likes Bruce Springsteen and people that like Bruce Springsteen like bad music. If the Foo Fighters sounded like a more mumbly, less creative Bob Dylan, he'd love them.

The Foo Fighters are OK, but Springsteen rocks. Your 2nd sentence explains everything -- less creative than Dylan. Springsteen IS America. Born To Run (the album) is a classic rock opera. Get back to me when any of the FF's albums crack the top 100 albums of all time. Just sayin'.

In fairness, I have a very narrow worldview.

He's Bob Seger with a better PR team...

DJ's Left Nut must be one of those bourgeoisie people who has never seen his town decline during a factory closing, and has never felt the need to hit the road in search of a place to re-invent himself. He has never had to rebuild a car from scratch and race in the street for money while his wife cries herself to sleep over her lost dreams.

Hank Williams and George Jones could make 'woe is the blue collar man' songs with the best of them as well and I don't figure that makes them the voice of America by any stretch.

Mopey old country songs get lampooned but when Springsteen makes one (or a dozen of them) they're suddenly masterworks...

I've seen it two or three times in my life.

Springsteen still sucks.

Springsteen shrugs off your criticisms and soldiers on, pursuing his dreams despite your attempts to crush him and break his spirit.

Have you ever seen the Born in the USA album cover? That's the American flag in the background. When I started this post, I intended to point that out as evidence that Springsteen speaks for America, but then I noticed it looks like he might be preparing to piss on it, so nevermind.
