Mansionmania Tournament: Round 1, Heat 18
Mansionmania continues. I'm going to show you the most expensive homes in every state and a few territories, with a few extras thrown in from the largest states to get the tourney up to 64. It'll be a single-elimination tournament.
You will choose among each pair of houses with the following assumptions:
I encourage you to click on the maps in the listings to see the general location and neighborhood. Also, I will only enter contestants if they have a sufficient number of photos to judge, as determined by me. Your entries in this heat are: South Carolina: https://www.realtor.com/realestatean...5_M67832-39919 South Dakota: https://www.realtor.com/realestatean...8_M90196-48181 |

This is the easiest one yet. South Carolina all the way. That place is perfect.

Hmm, compared to what we've been seeing, these homes are a bit underwhelming.
South Carolina. I have no idea why this house is $14.5 million, but I guess that's not my concern. It's a nice house. I don't really care for the location that much, other than the fact that I can get to Charleston, which is great. You probably have a pretty mild climate here, too. I like western South Dakota, but don't have much knowledge of eastern South Dakota. And this is pretty far east. You can almost throw a rock into Iowa from the front door. I think the photos were taken when the sun went supernova, but looking past that, I think the exterior is pretty attractive and the interior is somewhat blah. You get a few acres, but not enough to do wilderness rambles or anything. I could get a little more money from South Dakota, but the differentiator here is the access to Charleston. I choose South Carolina for that reason alone.

I have no reason to pick South Dakota than the South Carolina house is all white, black, and gray and I wouldn't spend 14.5 million to look at that blah shit all day.

I would by no means consider that SC house a mansion but man thats a beautiful house.
I said if I were simply looking to live on the coast it would be one of the Carolina's and that South Dakota house just looks uninspiring. $150k homes have more curb appeal than that brick monstrosity. SC easy win for me. |

I'm more than willing to sacrifice land for beach front property. This is a forever home, the investing part of having land means nothing in this scenario. I'm not picking solely on acreage. It's important to me and I would like not being on top of my neighbors, but no one owns the ocean. I'm free to do any activity I want out there.

As much as I'd hate living in SC (their BBQ will kill you), SD is just too far north and I've been to Sioux Falls -hard pass there.

The photographer for RASE didn't do the SD house any favors.

Whoever took the photos should be fired and bared from ever take photos of anything ever again.
As a buyer though, i can appreciate bad photos in real estate listings. It's part of why we were able to get the house we are in now. The photos looked terrible and I wouldn't have even looked at our home if my wife hadn't insisted. So much better than when the photos online look amazing, and the house is crap when you arrive.

He brought in his "professional" photographer and maybe the guy is a pro but obviously not a shooting real estate. The pics were clean but he used terrible angles that made rooms look smaller, weird lighting making it look darker than it really was, etc. I attributed some of the lack of people we got through the door on those photos. He also put the lockbox with the keys on the bottom horizontal bar of a metal fence and we got a foot of snow and ice burying it. Had two showings that just couldn't get in as a result. Its the little things that can mount up. It sucks because our realtor is also our friend so not really looking forward to that conversation when we put our house up this winter but business is business. |

South Carolina for sure. I can play a lot of golf with that $250,000 a year. And there are A LOT of golf courses in that area.
